Postdoctoral Research Fellow Position in Automated Business Process Improvement

Institute of Computer Science, University of Tartu, Estonia

University of Tartu's Institute of Computer Science is calling for expressions of interest from recent or soon-to-be PhD graduates for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in the ERC project The Process Improvement Explorer: Automated Discovery of Business Process Improvement Opportunities (PIX). The goal of this project is to develop algorithms to analyze business process execution data in order to automatically discover improvement opportunities and to estimate their potential impact.

If retained for this position, you will develop methods to automatically identify changes to the decision logic of a business process that are likely to enhance its performance along one or more performance measures. Among other directions, you will investigate the use of rule mining and cost-sensitive learning, in conjunction with process mining techniques, to fine-tune branching conditions in a business process. Your research will lead to novel methods, which will be validated on real datasets and case studies, and incorporated into an open-source tool for automated process improvement.

You will become part of a highly dynamic team focused on business process management and process mining. In the past 10 years, researchers in our team have earned more than 12 awards at international venues. The team has also contributed to the successful commercial spin-off of the Apromore open-source process mining platform.

The position will be fixed-term for a period of up to three years. The remuneration package is competitive by European standards.

To apply, you must have a PhD in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related discipline (or be close to obtaining your PhD). Expertise in business process management, data mining and/or optimization are essential.

Inquiries and expressions of interest should be sent by email to Marlon Dumas ( <firstname>.<lastname> [ät] ut.ee). If you wish to be considered, please send your CV (including list of publications) to this email address. Expressions of interests will be considered on a first-come, first-serve basis until the position is filled. The starting date for the position is negotiable, preferably by January 2022.

The position is for a PhD holder, but it is possible to join the group during your last few months of PhD studies via a "bridging contract" and to switch to a postdoctoral position upon PhD completion.
